Drain of the Abbeystead Reservoir

Abbeystead is a village in the Forest of Bowland in Lancashire , England . The place is at the confluence of the Tarnbrook Wyre and Marshaw Wyre , which form the Wyre here .

The name of the place is based on a house that was only inhabited by Cistercian monks for a few years in the time of Henry II and was located at the confluence of the two rivers.

In 1855 a reservoir was built to ensure that the Wyre had enough water in the summer for the operation of the spinning mills and weaving mills located further along the river . The reservoir is no longer in operation today, but can still be seen.

Today the Abbeystead Tunnel ends in Abbeystead. The Lune / Wyre Transfer Scheme has been pumping water from the River Lune near Caton into the Wyre via a pipeline since 1980 in order to secure the water supply for southern Lancashire.

To allay concerns about flooding allegedly caused by the connection along the Wyre, a group of visitors from St Michael's on Wyre was demonstrated on May 23, 1984 the function of the line in the underground outlet building. As it turned out later, methane gas that seeped into the pipe and that could collect in the pipe that was empty before the inspection led to an explosion in which sixteen people died.
