St Michael's on Wyre is a place in Lancashire , England near the towns of Preston , Blackpool and Fleetwood . The place has 601 inhabitants (as of 2001) and lies on the river Wyre .

The place is mentioned in the Domesday Book from 1086. The church has given the place its name since the 12th century, but its original name Upper Rawcliffe with Tarnacre is still used occasionally today and is the name of the Civil parish in which the place is located. According to legend, the first church in the village to be consecrated to the Archangel Michael was built between 627 and 640 at a ford of the Wyre.

The location of the place directly on the river Wyre, but especially the confluence of the river Brock in the Wyre east of the place and the near confluence of the river Calder expose the place to a great danger of flooding. Concerned residents toured the outlet building of the Abbeystead Tunnel in Abbeystead on May 23, 1984 to find out whether this connection of the River Lune to the Wyre would contribute to the flood hazard in their place. The visit resulted in a methane explosion , killing 16 people from St Michael's on Wyre and injuring many.
