Earl of Stafford

Earl of Stafford was a hereditary British title of nobility created twice in the Peerage of England .

Awards and subordinate titles

The title was first created on March 3, 1351 for Ralph de Stafford, 2nd Baron Stafford . As early as 1308 he had inherited the title of Baron Stafford from his father , which was given to him on February 6, 1299 as Barony by writ by Writ of Summons . His son, the 2nd Earl, inherited the title 3rd Baron Audley, created in 1317, from his mother . The 6th Earl was raised to Duke of Buckingham in 1444 . The 2nd Duke's title was revoked in 1483 for high treason, restored in 1485 for his son as the 3rd Duke, and in 1521 he was finally revoked for high treason and expired.

On October 5, 1688, the title was recreated twice. On the one hand, he was awarded for life ( Life Peerage ) Mary Howard, Baroness Stafford , who had already been awarded the title of 3rd Baron Stafford on September 12, 1640, also for life . Both titles expired on her death in 1694. On the other hand, the title was given as a hereditary title ( Hereditary Peerage ) to Mary's son Henry Stafford-Howard . This title expired when the 4th Earl died in 1762.
