Earl of Stockton

Earl of Stockton is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom , named after the English city of Stockton-on-Tees .

Award and subordinate titles

The title was bestowed on former British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan on February 24, 1984 . Along with the dignity of Earl, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden , of Chelwood Gate in the County of East Sussex , and of Stockton-on-Tees in the County of Cleveland .

The two titles are the last hereditary British peer titles to date to be awarded to a person who does not belong to the royal family .

The eldest son of the respective earl carries the courtesy title Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden as the title heir ( Heir Apparent ) .

The heir to the title is the son of the current earl, Daniel Macmillan, Viscount Macmillan of Ovenden (* 1974).
