Earl of Stradbroke , in the County of Suffolk , is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .

Awarding, Subsidiary Title, and Further History of the Title

The title was created on July 18, 1821 for John Rous, 1st Baron Rous , who had previously represented the Suffolk constituency as a member of the House of Commons . Along with being awarded the title of Earl of Stradbroke, he was given the subordinate title Viscount Dunwich , in the County of Suffolk. He had previously inherited the title of 6th Baronet , of Henham in the County of Suffolk, from his father in 1771 and was raised to Baron Rous , of Dennington in the County of Suffolk on June 14, 1796 in the Peerage of Great Britain .

He was succeeded by his eldest son, who later became Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk, among other things . His son, the 3rd Earl of Stradbroke, served between 1920 and 1926 as Governor of Victoria and also as Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk. He was also succeeded by the eldest son, who also served as Lord Lieutenant of Suffolk. The current title holder is the 6th Earl of Stradbroke, a nephew of the 4th Earl, who succeeded his father as Earl in 1983. The 6th Earl lives in Victoria , which earned him the nickname "Aussie Keith" in Suffolk.

The title Baronet , of Henham in the County of Suffolk, was created on August 17, 1660 in the Baronetage of England for John Rous , who had represented the constituencies of Dunwich and Eye in the House of Commons . His son, the 2nd Baronet, had represented the constituencies of Dunwich and Suffolk in the House of Commons. After his death, his son inherited the title of third baronet. This was also a member of the House of Commons for the constituency of Dunwich . His nephew, who inherited the title of 5th Baronet, also represented the Suffolk constituency in the House of Commons. His heir was his eldest son, the above-mentioned 6th Baronet, who was later awarded the peerage .

The family's ancestral home is in Henham Park near Blythburgh in Suffolk, where the Latitude music festival has been taking place since 2006 under the direction of Hektor Rouse .

Other well-known members of the Rous family were Admiral Henry John Rous , the second son of the 1st Earl, and Lieutenant General William Rous , who was Quartermaster-General to the Forces of the British Army between 1994 and 1996 .
