Earl of Thomond ( Irish Iarla Thuamhan ) was a hereditary British title of nobility that was awarded twice in the Peerage of Ireland .

Awards

In 1541, King Henry VIII of England was promoted to King of Ireland by the Parliament of Ireland . As a result, all monarchs and clan chiefs in Ireland were asked to give up their native titles in order to receive titles in the Peerage of Ireland. The previous king of Thomond Murrough O'Brien , who was a descendant of the Irish high king Brian Boru , gave up his royal title and recognized Henry VIII as liege lord and his ecclesiastical supremacy . On July 1, 1543 he was then given the title Earl of Thomond and the subordinate title Baron Inchiquin . The Earldom was bestowed with a special inheritance rule, so that when Murrough O'Brien died, only the Barony Inchiquin passed to his eldest son Dermod O'Brien († 1557), but the Earldom fell to his nephew Donough O'Brien , who also fell on July 1, 1543 had already been raised to Baron Ibrackan in the Peerage of Ireland . The 8th Earl was also elevated to Viscount Tadcaster on October 19, 1714 in the Peerage of Great Britain . With his death on April 20, 1741 the titles expired. Although he still existed with Charles O'Brien , who was the male descendant of a younger son of the 3rd Earl, the latter could not inherit him because he was an exiled Jacobite and already had his grandfather Daniel O'Brien, 3rd Earl . Viscount Clare , ostracized for treason in 1691 and stripped of all titles of nobility.

On 11 December 1756, the title for the was the House of Representatives Percy Wyndham-O'Brien newly created, along with the subsidiary title Baron Ibrackan . This was the son of the sister of the widow of the last earl's first award. The titles expired on July 21, 1774 when he died unmarried and childless.
