Murrough O'Brien, 1st Earl of Thomond ( Irish Gaelic Murchadh Carrach Ó Briain , † November 7, 1551 ) was the last Irish Gaelic King of Thomond and the first Earl of Thomond .

He came from the old Irish noble family O'Brien , who traced their lineage to the Irish high king Brian Boru . He was a son of Turlogh Donn O'Brien (Toirdhealbhach Donn Ó Briain), King of Thomond, from his second marriage to Raghnait MacNamara. His older brother Connor O'Brien (Conchobhar mac Toirdhealbaig Ó Briain) had been King of Thomond since his father's death in 1528. Murrough was raised in England and sympathized with Protestantism . When his brother died in 1539, his son and heir Donough O'Brien was still a minor, after which Murrough took over the royal office.

He first fought the expansion efforts of the English under King Henry VIII. , Who is the 1541 Parliament of Ireland to King of Ireland made a proclamation. Finally he submitted to Henry VIII and recognized him as liege lord . He gave up his kingship and was raised in return on July 1, 1543 in the Peerage of Ireland to Earl of Thomond and Baron Inchiquin . He also recognized Heinrich's ecclesiastical supremacy and converted to Anglicanism . The earl title was bestowed with the special inheritance rule that this should fall to Murroughs death to his underage nephew Donough O'Brien and Murroughs sons should only inherit the baron title. Donough O'Brien was also raised to Baron Ibrackan . In August 1453 he was accepted into Henry's Privy Council for Ireland .

He was married to Eleanor fitz John († after 1549), daughter of the Reverend John fitz Thomas, 12th Knight of Glin († after 1541). With her he had four sons and six daughters. His eldest son Dermod O'Brien († 1557) inherited him in 1551 as 2nd Baron Inchiquin.
