Earl of Wiltshire

Earl of Wiltshire is a hereditary title in the Peerage of England . The title has been awarded at least six times.

Awards

The title was first created on September 29, 1397 for William le Scrope . He was executed for high treason in 1399 and the title lapsed.

In the second bestowal, the title was created on July 8, 1449 for Sir James Butler . He also inherited the title of 5th Earl of Ormonde (created 1328) in the Peerage of Ireland from his father in 1452 . He, too, was executed for high treason in 1461 and the title of Earl of Wiltshire lapsed.

In the third award, the title was created on January 5, 1470 for John Stafford . The title expired when his son died in 1499.

In the fourth bestowal, the title was created for Henry Stafford on January 27, 1510 . The title expired on his death in 1523.

In the fifth bestowal, the title was created on December 8, 1529 for Thomas Boleyn, 1st Viscount Rochford . At the same time he was awarded the title of Earl of Ormonde in the Peerage of Ireland. The titles expired on his death in 1539.

The sixth award of the title was created on January 19, 1550 for William Paulet, 1st Baron St. John . He had already been awarded the title of Baron St. John (of Basing) on March 9, 1539 , and on October 11, 1551 he was also raised to Marquess of Winchester . The Earldom has since been a minor title of the Marquess. The 6th to 11th Earl was also Duke of Bolton . The current title holder is Nigel Paulet, 18th Marquess of Winchester . The Heir Apparent des Marquess has the courtesy title of Earl of Wiltshire .
