William Paulet, 1st Marquess of Winchester , KG (* around 1483 , † March 10, 1572 ) was an English nobleman and court official .

Life

He was a son of Sir John Paulet († 1525), landlord of Basing in Hampshire , and his wife Alice († after 1525).

He was sheriff of Hampshire in 1511/12, 1518/19 and 1522/23 . In 1523 he became a Knight Bachelor for beaten knight . From 1529 to 1536 he was Knight of the Shire for Hampshire MP in the House of Commons . In 1531 he received the right to fortify his family seat, the Basing House , and had the castle there rebuilt as a Tudor-style palace.

Under King Henry VIII he held the office of Comptroller of the Household from 1532 to 1537 and that of Treasurer of the Household from 1537 to 1539 . On March 9, 1539, the king elevated him to Baron St. John (of Basing) by letters patent , making him a member of the House of Lords . In 1542 the king took him on to the Privy Council . In 1543 he was accepted into the Order of the Garter as a Knight Companion . From 1543 to 1545 he was Lord Chamberlain of the Household , from 1545 to 1550 Lord Steward of the Household , and from 1546 to 1549 also Lord President of the Council . In 1547 he was also Lord Keeper of the Great Seal . During the reign of the Regency Council for the minor Edward VI. he was raised on January 19, 1550 to Earl of Wiltshire and on October 11, 1551 to Marquess of Winchester was 1551 Lord High Steward and in 1550 received the important court office of Lord High Treasurer . Although he supported Queen Jane Gray in 1553 , he was also confirmed as Lord High Treasurer by Queen Mary I and later by Queen Elizabeth I , and held this office until his death in 1572.

He was also Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire in 1552, 1553 and 1559 , Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire and Middlesex in 1569, and Joint Lord Lieutenant of London in 1569 in 1569. In 1558 and 1566 he was Speaker of the House of Lords.

Marriage and offspring

Around 1509 he married Elizabeth Capell († 1558), daughter of Sir William Capell († 1515), Alderman of London. With her he had two sons, John Paulet and Chidiock Paulet. His older son John inherited the title 2nd Baron St. John prematurely through Writ of Acceleration on October 3, 1554. When his father died in 1572, he inherited the other titles as 2nd Marquess of Winchester.
