James Tait
James Tait (born June 19, 1863 in Manchester , † July 4, 1944 in Wilmslow ) was a British medieval historian. He was Professor of Ancient and Medieval History at the University of Manchester .
Tait studied at Oxford and was then at the University of Manchester, where he held the Chair of Ancient and Medieval History from 1902 to 1919. Alongside Thomas Frederick Tout, he was the founder of the Manchester Historical School , which was committed to the intensive study of source texts. He was considered the leading authority on early medieval city history in England.
From 1923 to 1932 he was the first president of the English Place-Name Society . In 1921 he was elected a member of the British Academy .
