Marquess of Winchester
Marquess of Winchester is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of England .
The historic family residence of the Marquesses was, among other things, Basing House in Hampshire .
Award
The title was created on October 11, 1551 for statesman William Paulet, 1st Earl of Wiltshire , who served as Lord High Treasurer under Henry VIII and his children from 1550 to 1572 .
Subordinate title
The first Marquess had already been raised on March 9, 1539 to Baron St. John (of Basing) and on January 19, 1550 to Earl of Wiltshire . Both titles, which also belong to the Peerage of England, are now listed as subordinate titles to the Marquessat.
The eldest son of the Marquess bears the courtesy title of Earl of Wiltshire , the eldest son of Lord St. John .
Other titles
The sixth Marquess supported William III during the Glorious Revolution . of Orange and Mary II. For this he was elevated to Duke of Bolton on April 9, 1689 . This title expired when the sixth duke died on December 25, 1794 without male descendants and the other titles fell to a distant relative.
In 1717 the third Duke was to be appointed to the House of Lords through Writ of Acceleration , i.e. through the early transfer of a subordinate title from his father . Due to procedural errors , however, he was not appointed as Lord St. John (of Basing), but as Lord Pawlett of Basing , so that a new barony was created. The baron then inherited his father's title when he died. The new barony died out when the third duke died in 1754 without any legitimate children.
