Charles Paulet, 5th Duke of Bolton (also Harry Powlett , born November 6, 1720 , † December 25, 1794 in Hackwood, Hampshire ) was a British admiral peer and politician .

family

He was the younger son of Harry Powlett, 4th Duke of Bolton and Catherine Parry. As the younger son of a Duke , he used the courtesy address Lord Harry Powlett from 1754 .

He attended Winchester College , entered the Royal Navy and was promoted to lieutenant in 1739 . In 1741 he fought in the siege of Cartagena . In 1743 he was promoted to the rank of Captain , 1756 Rear Admiral and 1756 Vice Admiral , 1770 Admiral of the Blue and 1775 Admiral of the White .

For the first time in 1751 he was elected as a member of the House of Commons . He was a member of the House of Commons from 1751 to 1754 as an MP for the Borough of Christchurch , 1755 to 1761 for Lymington and 1761 to 1765 for Winchester . He belonged to the Whigs party . When his brother Charles died in 1765, he inherited his title of nobility as the 6th Duke of Bolton , thus receiving a seat in the House of Lords and leaving the House of Commons.

In 1766 he was admitted to the Privy Council . He served as Governor of the Isle of Wight from 1766 to 1770 and from 1782 to 1791 . In 1767 he was Vice-Admiral of Hampshire and Dorset and from 1782 to 1794 Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire.

In his first marriage he married Mary Nunn on May 7, 1752 in London , with whom he had a daughter:

In his second marriage he married Katherine Lowther on April 8, 1765 in London, with whom he had two daughters:

He died on December 25, 1794 on his Hackwood Park estate in Hampshire and was buried in Basing on January 2, 1795 . Since he had no sons, the Dukedom of Bolton became extinct with his death. His other older nobility titles fell to his fourth uncle, George Paulet (1722-1800) as the 12th Marquess of Winchester .
