Charles Paulet, 5th Duke of Bolton (also Charles Powlett , * around 1718, † July 5, 1765 in London ) was a British peer and politician .
family
He was the elder son of Harry Paulet, 4th Duke of Bolton and Catherine Parry. As his father's apparent marriage , he carried the courtesy title of Marquess of Winchester from 1754 .
He attended Winchester College , entered the British Army and in 1745 earned the rank of lieutenant-colonel . He had risen to the rank of Lieutenant General when he was made Knight Companion of the Order of the Bath on August 27, 1753 .
For the first time in 1741 he was elected as a member of the House of Commons . He was a member of the House of Commons from 1741 to 1754 as Burgess for Lymington and from 1754 to 1759 as Knight of the Shire for Hampshire . He belonged to the Whigs party . From 1754 to 1760 he held the post of Lieutenant of the Tower of London and from 1758 to 1763 that of Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire. On December 22, 1758 he was admitted to the Privy Council .
When his father died in 1759, he inherited his title of nobility as Duke of Bolton , thus receiving a seat in the House of Lords and leaving the House of Commons.
On July 5 In 1765 he committed suicide in his house in Grosvenor Square in London suicide by self shot himself with a pistol. He was buried on July 10, 1765 in Basing .
Since he remained unmarried, his possessions and titles of nobility fell to his younger brother Lord Harry Paulet as the 6th Duke of Bolton.
From a relationship with Mary Browne Banks he left an illegitimate daughter, Jean Mary Browne-Powlett (around 1751-1814). At the death of the 6th Duke of Bolton, she inherited substantial parts of the family's property and her husband was made Baron Bolton in 1797 .
