The title was created for Elizabeth Finch on July 11, 1628 . She had already been raised to Viscountess Maidstone on July 8, 1623 . She was the wife of Sir Moyle Finch, 1st Baronet , a longtime member of the House of Commons . After his death she was raised to the nobility.
When she died in 1634, her younger son Sir Thomas Finch, 3rd Baronet , inherited her titles, her older son Sir Theophilus Finch, 2nd Baronet , had died around 1619. He united the title of Baronet , of Eastwell in the County of Kent as a subordinate title with the Earldom. The Baronetcy was created in 1611 for his father Moyle Finch.
His son, the 3rd Earl, was awarded the title Baron FitzHerbert , of Eastwell in the County of Kent, in 1660 for his support of the Stuart Restoration .
At the death of the 6th Earl of Winchilsea on September 9, 1729, his second cousin, Daniel Finch, 2nd Earl of Nottingham , inherited his title. Already in 1682 he inherited the title Earl of Nottingham from his father , which he had been awarded in 1681. He also led the subordinate titles Baron Finch , of Daventry in the County of Northampton and Baronet, of Raunston in the County of Buckingham , which had been awarded to his father in 1673 and 1660, respectively. The Earldoms of Winchilsea and Nottingham, along with subordinate titles, have been united since then.
