Earl of Ypres
Earl of Ypres is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
The title was awarded to Field Marshal Sir John French on June 5, 1922 . The title name refers to the West Flemish city of Ypres and the surrounding Ypres arc , where French commanded the First and Second Battles of Flanders during the First World War . He had already been awarded the subordinate title Viscount French , of Ypres and of High Lake in the County of Roscommon on January 1, 1916, also in the Peerage of the United Kingdom .
With the death of his grandson, the third earl, on March 4, 1988, both titles expired.
