The East Channel Bridge is a freeway bridge in the US state of Washington , which leads Interstate 90 from Mercer Island over Lake Washington to Bellevue . It crosses the East Channel, which separates Mercer Island from the east coast of the lake.
The first bridge opened on November 10, 1923 and was the first permanent connection to the island. The wooden trestle bridge , which was only six meters wide, was 366 m long and was equipped with a swing bridge that could be opened for shipping. It was operated by George Lightfoot , who later campaigned for the construction of the Lake Washington Floating Bridge . The bridge was dismantled in 1940 and replaced by a new steel structure.
Today's bridge consists of two steel box girders . That for the carriageway to the west was completed in 1981, that for the carriageway to the east 1988th
