East Island or Whangaokeno is a small island two kilometers east of East Cape off the North Island of New Zealand .
It was the original location of the lighthouse that is now on the East Cape. This was built on the island in 1900. However, it turned out to be earthquake-prone and the steep cliffs caused numerous landslides . In 1920 it was therefore decided to relocate the lighthouse to the mainland. In 1922 it was dismantled and put back into operation on the East Cape.
