Ebbe Schmidt Nielsen

Ebbe Schmidt Nielsen (born June 7, 1950 in Ry , Denmark , † March 7, 2001 in California , USA ) was a Danish entomologist .

He studied at Aarhus University . From 1981 until his death, he lived and worked in Australia . He specialized in the taxonomy of insects , particularly in relation to butterfly research, and has contributed to the implementation of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). Nielsen published over 80 essays and various specialist books and was extremely respected in the professional world, which is why he received various awards. He died of a heart attack in California in 2001 .

After his death, the GBIF founded the Ebbe-Nielsen Prize, which has been awarded annually to promising researchers in the field of biodiversity ever since.
