life and work

From 1975 Frey studied biology at the University of Tübingen . There he obtained his diploma in 1982. He then worked as a research assistant at various konstruktionsmorphologischen research projects and in 1988 with the writing "The support system of crocodiles in the terrestrial locomotion -. Anatomical, biomechanical and phylogenetic analysis," Dr. rer. nat. PhD. After receiving his doctorate, he was employed by the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt . In 1990 he moved to the State Museum for Natural History in Karlsruhe. There he became chief curator in 1992 , and since 2003 he has been chief curator and head of the geosciences department. In 2002 he had already obtained his habilitation in palaeontology from the University of Karlsruhe with a thesis entitled “Construction morphology and biomechanics in paleontology” . In 2007 he received a post-doctoral qualification at the Faculty of Chemistry and Biosciences for the subject of Zoology. Frey has been teaching at the University of Karlsruhe since 1998. In 2011, the lecture series on Bionics and Architecture at the University of Stuttgart was added.

Frey's research focuses on reptiles of the Mesozoic Era , the early synapsids , the evolutionary processes especially in vertebrates, biomechanics and construction morphology, the paleobiogeography of marine systems during the Mesozoic Era and the development of the Upper Rhine Rift from the Oligocene . In the field of pterosaurs , Frey was able to discover several previously unknown species.
