from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ebru Soykan (* around 1981; † March 10, 2009 in Istanbul ) was a Turkish civil rights activist who campaigned for the rights of transsexuals in Turkey and was murdered at the age of 28.

Life

Soykan was involved as the leading force in the Turkish interest group for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, Lambda Istanbul , which was repeatedly under pressure from the authorities because of its commitment. More than in Europe, homosexuality is taboo in Turkey and socially outlawed.

Soykan was stabbed to death in 2009. She had previously complained to the authorities about attacks and death threats by a man. This man is on trial as a suspect. It is already the second murder of a Lambda member within a year.

After Soykan's death, the human rights organization Human Rights Watch called on Turkey to better protect homosexuals . There is a climate of violence.
