Owen Thomas Edgar

Owen Thomas Edgar (born June 17, 1831 in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , † September 3, 1929 ) was according to information from the US Department of Veterans, the last surviving veteran of the Mexican-American War .

Life

Born in Philadelphia, Edgar was drafted into the United States Navy on February 10, 1846 and discharged on August 8, 1849. He served on the frigates Potomac , Allegheny , Pennsylvania, and Experience . After his release, he worked for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for 21 years and then for a bank for another 30 years. From 1917 he lived in the John Dickson retirement home near Washington, DC Edgar died on September 3, 1929 after a leg fracture as a result of a fall. He was buried in the Washington Convention Cemetery.
