The Ebu-Bekr Mosque ( Albanian  Xhamia Ebu Bekër or Xhamia e Ebu Bekërit ), also called Great Mosque of Shkodra (Alb. Xhamia e Madhe e Shkodrës ), is the main mosque of the northern Albanian city of Shkodra .

history

The Fushë Çela Mosque was the previous building and originated from the Ottoman period

The previous building, the Fushë Çela Mosque , demolished by the communist regime , was of great importance for Shkodra and its surroundings in earlier centuries: the mosque of that time is not only said to have been one of the most beautiful and most visited mosques, but also served as an important medrese ( Koran school) and thereby attracted well-known theologians as well as students who only became known later to the city.

The mosque was designed by the architecture firm ARC Architectural Consultants and built from 1994 to 1995 on the site of the former Fushë Çela mosque with money from the Saudi Arabian entrepreneur Sheikh Zamil Abdullah Al Zamil in a modern Ottoman style . It was named after Abu Bakr (572–634), the first caliph after the prophet Mohammed . It was renovated in 2008.

The mosque, located at the end of the pedestrian zone and opposite the Hotel Colosseo, has an area of 622.72 square meters and offers enough space for 1,300 people. The two minarets are each 41.11 meters high. The central dome is 24 meters high.
