Ecage

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Ecage is in the Ethiopian Church , the head of all monasteries and monks and nuns as well as the head of the church administration. Among the Coptic metropolitans , he held the second highest rank in the church hierarchy. The holder of the office always came from the local Ethiopian clergy . This fact gave the Ecage a great influence as long as the Metropolitan of Ethiopia was a Copt . The office was initially reserved for the head of the Stephanos monastery in Hayksee and passed to the head of the Dabra Lebanon monastery in Shewa . The Ethiopian Patriarch currently holds the office of Ecage.
