The Echigo Sanzan Tadami Quasi National Park ( Japanese 越 後 三 山 只見 国 定 公園 , Echigo sanzan tadami kokutei kōen ) is a quasi national park in Japan . The park, founded on May 15, 1973, covers an area of 861.29 km². With the IUCN Category II, the park area is classified as a national park . The Fukushima and Niigata prefectures are responsible for managing the park. The park area consists of the Echigo Mountains upstream of the Tadami River and part of the Mikuni Mountains that is adjacent to it. A lot of snow falls in this steep mountain area and there are only a few settlements to this day. A large number of primeval forests are still preserved today, especially old beech forests. It is said to be the last untouched mountain area in Honshu . Japanese monkeys live upstream of the Tadami River and there are flying squirrels . The rhododendron colonies bloom in June . The Okutadami Lake ( 奥 只見 湖 , Okutadami kō ) in the park area is an artificial lake that was created through the construction of the Tagokura Dam and the Okutadami Dam (both completed in 1961). The maximum output of the Tagokura Dam is 380,000 kilowatts, making it the highest in Japan. The Okutadami Dam has the second highest output with 360,000 kilowatts. The nature around the reservoir attracts many tourists. In summer the pleasure boats operate on the lake and the lake is used as a fishing spot.
