The Echiniscoidea form an order of the tardigrades (Tardigrada) and belong to the class of the Heterotardigrada .
features
The animals show the characteristics typical of the class Heterotardigrada, a head with cirrus and lateral filaments . There are four or more separate, similar claws on each leg.
Cryptobiosis in the form of anhydrobiosis is typical of the Echiniscoidae family, but marine Echiniscoides species from habitats in the intertidal zone are also capable of cryptobiosis.
Systematics
There are four families in the order :
- The terrestrial Echiniscidae living on land are heavily armored by individual cuticle plates on the back .
- The sea-living (marine) Echiniscoididae have more than four claws.
- The Carphanidae live in fresh water ( limnic ) and have no clavae .
- In contrast, the rural Oreelidae are characterized by clavae .
