Echinocereus boyce-thompsonii is a species of plant in the genus Echinocereus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet boyce-thompsonii honors the American businessman and founder of the Boyce-Thompson Southwestern Arboretum (now Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park ) in Superior, Arizona William Boyce Thompson (1869-1930).
description
Echinocereus boyce-thompsonii forms loose groups consisting of three to twelve shoots . The green cylindrical to elongated shoots are 10 to 25 centimeters long and have a diameter of 4 to 7.5 centimeters, which are barely covered by the thorns. There are twelve to eighteen ribs , sometimes more, that are not noticeably humped. The three straight, slender, bent, flexible central spines are light yellow or straw-colored and have a dark to light brown tip. They have a length of 2.5 to 7.5 centimeters. The bottom of them is about two inches long. The ten to 14 spread, straight, whitish or greyish radial spines are 1.2 to 2 centimeters long.
The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are magenta to reddish purple in color. They appear in the upper half of the shoots, are 5 to 6.2 inches long and reach the same diameter. The spherical, fleshy, initially green fruits turn red later.
