Echinopsis hahniana is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet hahniana honors the German cactus connoisseur and collector from Berlin-Lichtenfelde Adolf Hahn († 1954).

description

Echinopsis hahniana grows with prostrate or hanging, laterally branching shoots . The shoot tips are occasionally bent up. The shoots occasionally form roots on their underside . They are circular in cross section and not ribbed . The bright green shoots are up to 75 centimeters long and have a diameter of 1.5 to 1.7 centimeters. The diamond-shaped humps are only indistinctly pronounced. From the areoles arise nine to twelve thorns that radiate in all directions. One to three of them are arranged more centrally. They are white, needle-like, piercing and have a brownish tip. At the base these thorns are slightly thickened and 0.2 to 0.5 centimeters long.

The creamy white flowers are 15.5 to 17 centimeters long. Your pericarpel and the flower tube are covered with scales and tufts of rather stiff, brownish, twisted hair . The egg-shaped, reddish green, smooth fruits are thorny. They are up to 3.2 inches long and 2.3 inches in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis hahniana is distributed in the northeast of Paraguay in the area of ​​the Río Apa on limestone cliffs at altitudes of 200 to 500 meters.

The first description as Mediocactus hahnianus by Curt Backeberg was published in 1957. Robert S. Wallace placed the species in 1997 in the genus Echinopsis .

Another nomenclature synonyms is Harrisia hahniana (Backeb.) Kimnach & Hutchison (1987).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
