Echinopsis oxygona is a species of the genus Echinopsis in the cactus family(Cactaceae).

description

Echinopsis oxygona usually grows in groups, with depressed spherical to spherical, grass-green shoots that reach a diameter of 5 to 25 centimeters. There are 8 to 14, rounded, sometimes humped ribs . The slightly sunken areoles on it are white. From them arise horn-colored, spreading thorns which are a little darker at their tips. The one to five thick, needle-shaped central spines, which can occasionally be missing, are up to 3 centimeters long. The somewhat needle-like 3 to 15 radial spines are up to 2.5 centimeters long.

The long, funnel-shaped, fragrant, light pink to lavender colored flowers open at night. They become up to 22 centimeters long. The green fruits are up to 4 centimeters long and 2 centimeters in diameter.

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Echinopsis oxygona is distributed in Brazil , northeast Argentina , Uruguay and Paraguay at depths of up to 1000 meters.

It was first described as Echinocactus oxygonus in 1830 by Heinrich Friedrich Link . Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini placed the species in the genus Echinopsis in 1845 .

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
