The Real dog seals ( Phoca ) are a kind of true seals and comprise two types, including the known seal ( Phoca vitulina ).
Systematics
According to the current status, the real dog seals comprise two types:
- Largha seal ( Phoca largha )
- Common seal ( Phoca vitulina )
In the past, the genus contained numerous other species, which have now merged into different genera. So which is harp seal today as Pagophilus groenlandicus of monotypic genus Pagophilus assigned and the Ringed Seal ( Pusa hispida ) and the two seals freshwater Baikal Seal ( Pusa sibirica ) and Caspian Seal ( Pusa caspica ) are of the genus Pusa assigned.
According to the cladistic analyzes of Bininda-Emonds and Russell, the entire genus was paraphyletic with regard to the bearded seal ( Erignathus barbatus ), and according to Palo and Väinöla possibly also with regard to the gray seal ( Halichoerus grypus ). As a basal species, the Largha seal could probably also be the sister species of all other representatives, and the monophyly of the two freshwater species with the ringed seal is also questioned on a molecular level.
