Eco-Drive ("Eco", English, French, Italian ; abbreviation for ecological / economical; "Drive" , for drive) is an austerity program initiated by the Federal Office of Energy , which in Switzerland is the ecological, economic and promote safe driving. The focus of the various measures is on drivers of passenger cars and various types of commercial vehicles. Since 2005, Eco-Drive has been part of the compulsory two-phase training for new car drivers.

The managing association, Quality Alliance Eco-Drive (QAED), is an association of Swiss federal agencies, transport associations as well as companies, organizations and people involved in driver training.

Austerity program

Content and goals

On the one hand, Eco-Drive aims at purely driving and behavioral know-how in traffic. On the other hand, there is also the economic goal of saving as much fuel as possible, which in turn lowers CO 2 emissions. This contribution to climate protection was the original reason why QAED was founded in 1999. This economic and ecological behavior should also support anticipatory driving (and vice versa), which should have a positive effect on road safety. The success of this driving technique prompted the responsible federal agency to integrate Eco-Drive into compulsory driver training. This means that practically all of the key players involved in Swiss road traffic (see the Partners section ) are now involved in the program.

Passenger cars and commercial vehicles

Eco-Drive comprises a series of recommendations on vehicle and driving technique. If you observe these, you save 10 to 15% fuel with a passenger car. The savings potential for commercial vehicles is 5 to 10%. Driving instructors, new and old drivers and drivers of commercial vehicles such as trucks, buses and delivery vans, but also construction machines and snow groomers are addressed.

Activities

In order to communicate the savings potential and the related recommendations, QAED implements various measures. This includes the promotion of eco-drive courses for car and commercial vehicle drivers, educational work in contact with the public, for example with mobile driving simulators, tire pumping campaigns at petrol stations, information campaigns in the media and at trade fairs. Further measures are the training and further education of driving instructors and instructors, the certification of organizers, courses and specialists as well as the further development of a free app for the iPhone.

development

QAED checks your success with various parameters. Above all, this includes the development of the targeted target groups and CO 2 emissions. According to information from QAED, more than 68,200 people took part in Eco-Drive courses in 2010, which resulted in savings of around 76,000 tonnes of CO 2 . This amount corresponds to the equivalent of 362 oil tankers of the Swiss Federal Railways.

Foundation of an association

prehistory

As an ecological driving technique, the word mark Eco-Drive was already known before the club was founded. Ernst Reinhardt, then head of the transport department of the federal action program “Energy 2000”, brought the term into circulation on Swiss roads. Eco-Drive should be more than just a technical driving formula. Eco-Drive should mutate into a seal of quality that sets standards in driver training and secures them in the long term. Nationwide, as far as possible, all economic sectors and persons involved in motorized traffic should be recorded.

founding

Shortly before the turn of the millennium, representatives from the areas of road traffic and driver training came together: federal agencies, transport associations as well as companies and organizations from the private sector. On December 7, 1999, they founded the Quality Alliance Eco-Drive association with an office in Zurich. The foundation was supported by the performance mandate of the Federal Office for Energy (BfE). QAED communicates with the registered trademark Eco-Drive, which belongs to the BfE. The founding president was Ernst Hug. From 2004–2015, Chiara Simoneschi-Cortesi , who was CVP National Councilor until 2011, held the presidency. Today's president has been Urs Gasche , member of the BDP national council , since 2015 . .

Porters and partners

QAED is financially supported significantly by SwissEnergy, a program of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy, and the Foundation Climate Cent . In 2010, their contribution amounted to around 87% of the financial expenditure of around 3 million Swiss francs. Additional support comes from other companies, associations and institutions. These include traffic and driving instructor associations, companies in the car and traffic sector and institutions in the field of driver training.

EnergieSchweiz is the platform that combines all activities in the field of renewable energies and energy efficiency under one roof. This takes place in a coordination between the federal government, cantons, municipalities and partners from business, environmental and consumer organizations and private-sector agencies.
