Hansteen is an impact crater on the front of the moon on the western edge of Oceanus Procellarum , northwest of Billy crater . The rim of the crater is only slightly eroded, and the ground is furrowed with the characteristics of a broken bottom crater .
To the west of the crater, the Rima Hansteen moon groove runs parallel to the crater rim and to the southeast is the elevation of Mons Hansteen .

The crater was officially named by the IAU in 1935 after the Norwegian astronomer Christopher Hansteen .
