Chiara Simoneschi-Cortesi (born April 21, 1946 in Zurich ) is a Swiss politician ( CVP ) and a former member of the National Council . From 1999 she represented the canton of Ticino in the National Council for twelve years and was its president for the parliamentary year 2008–2009 .

Simoneschi-Cortesi was born in Zurich to an Italian-speaking father and a German-speaking mother. She grew up in Comano . After graduating from high school , she studied sociology and political science at the University of Bern . She dropped out of college when she married an Italian and became pregnant. In 1968 she moved with him to Ticino .

Simoneschi-Cortesi is entitled to live in Lugano and has three children.

Simoneschi-Cortesi is a member of the Christian Democratic People's Party . From 1984 to 1998 Chiara Simoneschi-Cortesi was a member of the municipal council of Comano , she presided over it in 1996/97. From 1987 to 1988 she was a member of the Grand Council of the Canton of Ticino ; In 1998/99 she chaired him. In 1999 Simoneschi-Cortesi was elected to the National Council. Simoneschi chaired the Federal Commission on Women's Issues for ten years ; In 2007, however, she resigned as Commission President due to the new incompatibility rule. In addition to family issues, her core topics also include education and transport issues. Simoneschi takes a more conservative position on socio-political issues and thus represents the attitude of her party; However, she was at odds with the majority of her parliamentary group when she called for a minimum wage of 3500 francs for all employees .

In the 2007/08 parliamentary year, she was the first female vice-president of the National Council. For the parliamentary year 2008/09, Simoneschi-Cortesi was elected President of the National Council with 134 of 166 valid votes . In this position she succeeded the Vaud SVP parliamentarian André Bugnon . She was the first representative of Italian-speaking Switzerland to sit on the chair of the National Council President since Luigi Generali in 1978/79.

In the 2011 elections , Simoneschi-Cortesi no longer ran.

She is part of the initiative committee of the corporate responsibility initiative .
