history

At the request of German shipowners from the shipyard's clientele, Bremer Vulkan initially developed the two types BV 1600 and BV 1800. In the mid-1980s, they asked for a container ship design for long-term charter to the liner shipping company Compagnie Maritime d'Affrètement (CMA) from Marseille. The basis of the draft smaller ship type Econprogress BV 1000 . In order to be able to offer larger numbers of the successful ship type, numerous ships of the series were built at the Bremerhaven Schichau-Seebeck shipyard.

The BV-1600 and BV-1800 series were manufactured in 30 units from 1986 to 1995, 18 at Bremer Vulkan and twelve at SSW. The ships were mainly used in the worldwide liner service of the CMA, but other liner shipping companies also used the ship type. Depending on the version, the individual ships are tailored to the particular application in terms of length, engines with 6800 to 12,180 kW power, the equipment with cranes or their preparation and other special features. On the basis of the shorter type BV 1600, the type BV 1700 was later derived with an increased number of parking spaces, and the even more powerful types BV 1800S and BV 1900 were developed from the longer type BV 1800. Four units of the types BV 1700 and BV 1900 were built between 1995 and 1997 at the MTW shipyard in Wismar.

Various components of the ship of the future research program, which runs in parallel, were implemented in the series.

Noteworthy within the series is a number of units that were delivered to the Contship shipping company between 1992 and 1995. They were each given a uniform, single-colored surface paint, which also included the superstructures, masts, cranes, etc. The color scheme of the Contship Singapore was completely yellow, that of the Contship Germany completely pink and that of the Contship Italy completely turquoise.
