The Econprogress BV 1000 container ship type from Bremer Vulkan formed the basic design for a number of other successful container ship types .

details

The BV 1000 series of the Bremer Vulkan was built for numerous German shipping companies from the mid-1980s. The design was based on the multi-purpose container ships of the CMPC program and was supplemented in the 1980s by Bremer Vulkan with the larger Econprogress BV 16/1800 ship types to form an extremely successful model family. Even after the collapse of the Bremen Vukan group in the mid-1990s, the BV 1000 formed the basis for the further developed types VW 1100 and VW 1100.1 from Volkswerft Stralsund .

The ships are designed as multi-purpose dry cargo ships with a deckhouse far aft. They are mainly used in container transport. The container capacity is 1020 TEU, with homogeneously loaded 14-ton containers it is still 693 TEU. The ships have three holds that are closed with pontoon hatch covers that are divided fore and aft . The ships were developed for use in areas with poorly developed port infrastructure and are therefore each equipped with two on-board cranes, each with a capacity of 40 tons, arranged amidships.

One characteristic of the type is the container recess protruding outwards on both sides in the upper bulwark of the foredeck area (it allows two TEU more space on deck), another is the tapering tapering of the two upper decks of the deckhouse . The ships are equipped with freefall lifeboats arranged at the stern .

The ships are powered by a two-stroke diesel engine made by MAN / B & W with an output of around 6000 kW. The motor acts directly on the fixed propeller and enables a speed of around 17 knots. There are also three auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator available. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .

Various components of the ship of the future research program, which runs in parallel, were implemented in the series.

A noteworthy side note was the auxiliary sailing drive, which was used in trial operation on the Bold Eagle in 1985/86 under the aegis of the shipping company Jonny Wesch . Although it was reported that savings of DM 20,000 per 70-day round trip were made, the system consisting of two spinnaker sails attached to the ship's cranes was taken out of service after around a year. The reason given was an order from the See-Berufsgenossenschaft that the shipping company had not submitted an application to operate a sailing ship.
