The VW 1100 series of the Stralsund Volkswerft was built in 1994/95 for the German shipping company Schepers. The design goes back to the BV 1000 ship type designed and built by Bremer Vulkan in the 1980s . In 1995 the series was continued with the further developed VW 1100.1 .
The ships are designed as multi-purpose dry cargo ships with a deckhouse far aft. They are mainly used in container transport. The container capacity is 1104 TEU, with homogeneously loaded 14 ton containers it is correspondingly less. The ships have three holds that are closed with pontoon hatch covers. The ships were developed for use in areas with poorly developed port infrastructure and are therefore each equipped with two NMF cranes, each with a capacity of 45 tons, arranged amidships .
One characteristic of the type is the container recess protruding outwards on both sides in the upper bulwark of the foredeck area (it allows two TEU more space on deck), another is the tapering tapering of the two upper decks of the deckhouse . The ships are equipped with freefall lifeboats arranged at the stern .
The ships are powered by a two-stroke diesel engine from the manufacturer Dieselmotorenwerk Rostock (DMR) with an output of around 10,000 kW. The motor acts directly on the fixed propeller and enables a speed of 18.5 knots service speed and 19.25 knots top speed. There are also three auxiliary diesels and an emergency diesel generator available. The berthing and casting off maneuvers are supported by a bow thruster .
