Ecopop

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ecopop ( suitcase word for écologie et population , association for the environment and population) is a Swiss environmental protection organization and has been dealing with the pollution of the natural foundations of life by an increasing number of people since 1970. The association, based in Effingen AG, is politically and denominationally independent according to its statute and is a member of the European Population Alliance .

aims

The main concern is the preservation of the basis of life for humans and nature. The goals of other environmental organizations to reduce the environmental impact per capita are also shared by Ecopop. In addition, taking into account the size of the population is an important factor for Ecopop. It is about the burden on the earth by humanity, regardless of nationality or religion.

Federal popular initiative

On November 2, 2012, the association submitted the federal popular initiative “Stop overpopulation - to secure the natural foundations of life” to the Federal Chancellery. The two demands of the popular initiative were:

  1. Annual net immigration to Switzerland is limited to an average of 0.2 percent of the permanent resident population
  2. At least ten percent of the SDC government funds must be invested in measures to promote voluntary family planning in the recipient countries

The initiative came to the vote on November 30, 2014, where it was clearly rejected with 74.1% no votes. Not a single canton accepted the initiative, and the turnout was around 49.4%.

In the course of the voting campaign, the initiators were faced with accusations of eco-fascism . This allegation was made by FDFA State Secretary Yves Rossier at a CVP event on January 11, 2013. After a threat of legal action, Rossier apologized for this allegation. The board of directors announced that Ecopop would distance itself from any form of fascism and right-wing extremism and would consistently counter such allegations with criminal complaints.
