Ed Lewis (musician)

Ed Lewis (* 22. January 1909 ; † 18th September 1985 ) was an American jazz - trumpet .

Ed Lewis began his music career in Kansas City with Jerry Westbrook as a baritone horn player, in 1925 he switched to the trumpet. He then played with Paul Banks and Laura Rucker before joining Bennie Moten's orchestra , of which he was a member from 1926 to 1932. There he was first soloist until Hot Lips Pages joined the band. In the 1930s he worked with Thamon Hayes (1932–34), Harlan Leonard (1934–37) and Jay McShann (1937). In 1937 he joined the Count Basie Orchestra , where he stayed until 1948 when Count Basie had to temporarily break up the band. He was involved in many of the Basie Band's recordings, but was not a soloist. In the 1950s Lewis had his own formation, with which he had local appearances in New York City and worked for a while as a taxi driver. Shortly before his death he played with the formation The Countsmen .

Ed Lewis also worked on recordings of Lester Young (1944), Blanche Calloway , King Pleasure and Annie Ross .
