resume
Edgar Dittmar was a keen model pilot even as a child. After the early death of his mother and because of the illness of his father, who was a dentist, he had to look after his younger brothers Heini and Walter, who both made aviation careers themselves. In 1925/26 Dittmar completed his training as a powered flight pilot. From 1926 to 1928 he started as a glider pilot at Flugtage and was one of the first pilots to show tow plows behind powered aircraft. At the Rhön glider flying competition in 1928, he set a world record in gliding ( Wasserkuppe 775 m above the start). In 1933 Dittmar took part in the feature film Rivals of the Air . From 1939 to 1945 Dittmar worked as a flight instructor for gliders. In 1953 he took part in the German gliding championship. In the 1950s, Dittmar was Vice President and President of the Bavarian Air Sports Association . As a motorized pilot, Edgar Dittmar won the German flight in 1958 and thus a Piper PA 18 motorized aircraft as the overall winner. His main job was as a businessman from 1926 until his retirement in 1983. In 1970 Dittmar was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon . Dittmar died in Schweinfurt in 1994 and was buried there.
