from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Edificio Cines Plaza y Central is a building in the Uruguayan capital, Montevideo .

After a competition in 1949, according to other sources in 1947, for its construction in 1953, the building is located in Barrio Centro at Plaza de Cagancha 1129, corner of Avenida Gral. Rondeau 1383. Architect Rafael Lorente Escudero was responsible for the construction . In the original concept it served as a residential apartment block and cinema. It now houses two movie theaters, nine residential apartments, retail, a confitería and a parking garage.

The Edificio Cines Plaza y Central has been classified as a Bien de Interés Municipal since 1995 .

In January, the daily newspaper El País reported on the sale of the former cinema for four million US dollars to the church " Dios es Amor ". Due to a public discussion about the large Pentecostal churches and churches but also the large non-governmental organizations in Uruguay and their investments in the millions, the government feels compelled to bring a law on the disclosure of sources and accounts in motion. Various churches such as the Dios es Amor and the " Iglesia Universal del Reino de Dios " are accused of money laundering.
