Edificio Telefónica
The Edificio Telefónica is a high-rise in Madrid . It was built between 1926 and 1929 on the Gran Vía shopping street according to plans by Ignacio de Cárdenas Pastor as the headquarters of the Compañía Telefónica Nacional de España . In addition to the design language, which is clearly based on American skyscrapers, it also has characteristics of Churriguerism , a Spanish variant of baroque architecture. The construction costs amounted to 32 million pesetas (corresponds to approx. 53 million euros today). The 14-storey building was the first high-rise in Europe at 89 m and was not replaced by the 117 m high Edificio España as the tallest building in Spain until 1953 .
Due to its height, the building with its tower tower served as a kind of watch and observation tower for the Republicans during the Spanish Civil War , but it also suffered damage from shelling by nationalist troops .
The clock, which has been illuminated in red since 1967, is a significant landmark on the evening skyline. It has been illuminated in blue since 2013, in accordance with the company color of Telefónica.
