Editions in Magic: The Gathering

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The trading card game Magic: The Gathering is sold in editions ( Editions in Magic: The Gathering ) or sets, with a large number of new cards appearing every year.

Types of editions

Main sets

In 1993 three main editions were released ( Alpha , Beta and Unlimited ), in 1994 the main set Revised was released . The original edition Alpha and the slightly modified edition Beta were later also referred to as 1st Edition , Unlimited as 2nd Edition and Revised as 3rd Edition .

From 1995 to 2007 a new main set ( 4th edition to 10th edition ) was released every two years . The term main set or English core set was only introduced in 2003 with the 8th edition . The main sets from Unlimited to 10th edition consist of cards that have already been published in other editions (main sets or extensions) (reprints).

From 2009 to 2015, a new main set was published every year ( Magic 2010 , Magic 2011 etc.), each consisting of roughly equal parts of new cards and reprints. In 2018 a new core set was released under the name Core Set 2019 . This contains, in addition to the new cards, reprints from the previously published expansion blocks Amonkhet, Kaladesh and Ixalan and the previous main sets. The publication date was July 13, 2018.

Main sets do not have an overarching theme and the rules are kept rather simple in order to make them more attractive for beginners.

The main sets are mainly sold as 15-card boosters. In addition, are or were also

  • Starter Decks (Alpha, Beta, Unlimited, Revised, Fourth Edition, Fifth Edition),
  • Tournament Packs (Sixth Edition),
  • Themed decks (Seventh Edition, Eighth Edition, Ninth Edition, Tenth Edition),
  • Intro Packs (Magic 2010, Magic 2011, Magic 2012, Magic 2013, Magic 2014, Magic 2015)
  • Large boxes (Revised, Fourth Edition),
  • 2-player starter sets (Sixth Edition, Seventh Edition, Eighth Edition (released as the main game ), Ninth Edition),
  • Fat Packs (Tenth Edition, Magic 2010, Magic 2011, Magic 2012, Magic 2013, Magic 2014, Magic 2015)
  • Event Decks (Magic 2012, Magic 2013, Magic 2014)
  • Booster Battle Packs (Magic 2012, Magic 2013, Magic 2014)
  • Clash Packs (Magic 2015)
  • Deck building boxes / Deck Builder's Toolkits (Magic 2011, Magic 2012, Magic 2013, Magic 2014, Magic 2015)

offered. However, these are often not available in all published languages.

Extensions

Up to 2015, around three new editions were released annually as an extension, with three connected editions usually forming a so-called block . A block consists of three thematically related editions, which are published every three months. The first edition of a block, which usually gives the block its name, usually contains significantly more cards than the other two editions. The majority of the cards in the blocks have not yet been printed in this form, and fundamentally new game mechanics are introduced, which are often not continued later.

Between autumn 2015 and spring 2018, four editions were published each year, with two editions always forming a block. The sets were released in October, February, April and July, with the expansion released in July replacing the core set.

Since the return of the main sets in summer 2018, three editions have been released annually as extensions, but the old block system has been abolished. The three annual extensions are stand-alone editions that can be linked in thematic blocks, but which are not tied to a fixed number of sets.

The extensions are also mainly sold as boosters. As with the main sets, there are also intro decks , booster battle packs and many other forms of distribution.

Other expenses

In addition to the main sets and the expansions, there are numerous other editions:

Between 1997 and 2000 five different entry-level sets ( portal and starter ) were released. These were called boosters , two-player starter set , Bigbox , Themendeck sold.

In 1996 a Pro Tour Collector Set and from 1997 to 2004 annual World Championships decks were released that are not tournament legal with a gold rim and a different back. These contain preconstructed decks of approx. 60 cards each plus 15 sideboard cards, as played by the finalists of the world championships.

In 1998 and 2004, Unglued and Unhinged were released, each with a silver border , which humorously caricatured the Magic world; these cards, which came out as a booster, are also not tournament legal.

In 2007 and 2008, a pre-constructed Duel Deck has been published twice a year since 2009 , which consists of two times 60 cards.

Since 2008, a compilation of 15 or 20 reprint foil cards has been published as From the Vault every year .

From 2009 to 2011 a pre-constructed premium deck was published each year, each consisting of 60 foil cards.

There are also different editions designed for special multiplayer game variants. Four different Vanguard editions were published from 1997 to 1999 , two Planechase editions in 2009 and 2012 , an Archenemy edition in 2010 and three Commander editions from 2011 to 2013 .

There are a number of other manifestations. So there is

  • various reprint editions,
  • Cards that are only dealt in certain tournaments,
  • Cards that can only be won in tournaments
  • Cards that are only available as inserts in magazines.

Visual design

Since the 8th edition published in 2003 , the cards have been brought out in a more modern layout. This affects the card frame, the fonts used and also the colors. The color of the artifact cards was initially brown and has been gray since the 8th edition .

In the beginning there were protests from the players about the new look of the cards. Wizards of the Coast then improved in some places.

In the 2007 World Chaos and View into the Future editions , some cards had a futuristic look, which was limited to these editions.

Up to the 9th edition published in 2005, editions that consisted of reprints only had a white border and the other editions had a black border. This regulation was lifted with the 10th edition published in 2007 , so that since then all regular editions have been published with a black border. Since the Urzas Legacy Edition, published in 1999, foil cards (shiny metallic cards) have also been added to the boosters. These cards always had a black border even in the reprint editions.

Finally, there are cards with a silver or gold border, pointed (instead of the normal rounded) corners or another image on the back. These are special cards that are not allowed to be used in tournaments.

In 2015 the design of the cards was changed slightly again. Important here are the additional information printed on the cards and the introduction of the specially developed "Beleren" font (after Jace Beleren, an important character of the so-called Lore ).

Subject of the editions

Two editions each, which are combined into a block, have a specific background story. This history can include, as (English in the history to Urza, the Weltenwanderer several blocks Plane Walker ) is the case. It begins in 1998 in the Urza block and only ends in 2001 in the Invasion block with his death. Since the Mirrodin block, which appeared in 2003, the entire scene has been transported to another world, so a new background is created. But even in these blocks, elements from the previous blocks are still used. So Karn, the creator of Mirrodin in the Mirrodin block was created by Urza himself in the Urza block and played a role in many subsequent editions. In the older editions that were not published in German, there is usually no such comprehensive story hidden behind the cards. There just a little background story about the cards was thought up.

no Limited Edition - Alpha August 1993 295 cards The first edition of Magic was subsequently called Alpha . Shortly afterwards, it had to be reprinted due to the high demand. This reprint fixed a few issues with Alpha (such as two forgotten cards) and is called Beta . Alpha cards differ from all subsequent cards in one small thing: They have rounder corners and may therefore only be played with opaque covers at official tournaments (unless the deck consists exclusively of alpha cards, which makes the deck uniform again would). Since even the reprint of the beta cards could not satisfy the immense demand, the so-called Unlimited Edition was printed, the white frame of which should make it clear that it was a reprint. Alpha and Beta are 1st Edition , Unlimited 2nd Edition .

April 19, 1995 383 cards The Ice Age block was not originally designed as a block and was only played as such afterwards. Ice Age was planned as the first expansion for Magic, but the development took a very long time, which is why some other expansions were already released before. Homelands is considered to be the weakest extension to date. It contained only a few powerful cards and therefore disappointed many players. In addition, the cards did not match those of Ice Age and Alliances in terms of content or game technology. For this reason, Homelands in the Ice Age block was replaced in 2006 by the Coldsnap expansion , which took up and further developed the content and game mechanisms from Ice Age and Alliances.

As a result, the mechanics of the individual editions played together better than before. Weatherlight started to tell a story with a partly central plot on the cards. This should reduce the “anonymity” of the cards.

The Urza block is considered "degenerate" because its cards were too strong and there were games that only lasted a few moves. This led to the ban on many cards in tournament games. Urza's Legacy included foil cards for the first time.

Vanguard cards

Vanguard cards are larger than ordinary Magic playing cards. These magic playing cards were last printed in April 1999 and are generally prohibited in tournaments. Vanguard cards are in the game from the start. They have neither strength nor resilience, but affect the player's life points and the number of cards that he has in hand from the beginning and is at the same time his maximum number of cards. With a vanguard card, for example, it is possible to hold up to eight cards in hand or to start with 27 life points. Often they also have other abilities, such as the Sliver Queen, Brood Mother card , which allows a player to use mana to bring creature tokens into play. However, they are not really part of the game and therefore cannot be influenced from within the game.
