Nature reserves

EALT acquires and protects environmentally significant areas in the Edmonton Region, including Camrose Counties, Leduc Counties, Parkland Counties, Strathcona Counties, Sturgeon Counties, and Wetaskiwin Counties. The nature reserves come together on an area of approx. 8.4 km². (As of January 2016) After the acquisition of a new protected area, EALT creates an initial data report on which landscape features as well as flora and fauna are documented. A management plan is then drawn up in order to decide on future measures. EALT works closely with other non-profit organizations to acquire additional protected areas. The organization relies on the support of volunteers to carry out field work, including local scout groups or students. Wildlife watching and invasive weed control are among the most common activities and require annual attention. EALT supports geocaching and has installed a dozen geocaches with information about the Edmonton region on six of the protected areas.
