Edmund Kuppel (* 1947 in Blumenfeld ) is a German artist .

Life

Edmund Kuppel studied sculpture at the Karlsruhe Art Academy from 1966 to 1970 and, at the same time, from 1969 to 1972 art history at the University of Karlsruhe. After completing his studies, he received a visiting professorship at the University of Fine Arts in Braunschweig from 1987-88 and in 2002 at the Karlsruhe Art Academy.

He mainly deals with photography . He builds photographic apparatus and machines for the production and display of images in order to illustrate the emergence and technical conditions of photography and perception. For this reason his work is classified in the field of analytical photography . One device that he develops and builds is a rear-view mirror mounted in front of the camera. In this way, the spot from which the photographer is taking the respective picture is also visible in this mirror. This rearview mirror camera is used for photo sequences, in "Squares" from 1977, in which Parisian squares are recorded, and in the Eiffel Tower series. In it, the Eiffel Tower is photographed from various "tourist" places. In the image of the Eiffel Tower, however, the respective location from which the photo is taken appears, such as Sacre Coeur or Arc de Triomphe .

This approach is fully used in the bistro cycle to document the photo landscapes in the Parisian bistros. Until the 1970s, the walls of the bistros were decorated with photo wallpapers depicting landscapes from France. Kuppel photographs the photo wallpaper with the rearview mirror camera, whereby only the landscape appears in the picture. The location of the picture can be seen in the rearview mirror.

Kuppel developed the 'Cabinet of Ferdinand von Blumenfeld' from the Bistro series. Ferdinand von Blumenfeld is a fictional photographer who photographed the bistro landscapes. The photos of the bistro landscapes were supplemented by short notes that reflect on the peculiarities of the respective landscape, the bistro or the changes since the last visit.

In addition to the photo work, Kuppel also deals with film and video. To show the films, sometimes endless loops are built, as well as machines for photo work. One example is the photo installation The Wave and the Film Projection When the Sea Replaces the Sky
