Life

Even in his youth, the family environment was shaped in detail by references to the military of the Napoleonic era. His grandfather served under Napoleon Bonaparte , his great-aunt was the wife of the French admiral Pierre de Villeneuve . At the age of 17 Detaille joined Jean-Louis-Ernest Meissonier's studio and in 1867 exhibited his first painting, a view of his master's studio.

As early as the next year he completed his first painting from the military genre with Die Rast der Drummler . The motifs for his pictures corresponded to detailed preference for soldiers and horses, but he also celebrated successes with his lively costumes from the revolutionary era ( corner of a café , The Incroyables ). When the Franco-Prussian War broke out in 1870 (in which Detaille initially took part), his art was henceforth dedicated to the glorification of the bravery and nobility of his compatriots, and since he knew how to combine the happy choice of motifs with a great liveliness of the representation, he achieved success his war pictures gained widespread popularity.

Detaille was also an excellent watercolourist, and in 1885 co-published a two-volume illustrated history of the French army ( L'armée française ) with Jules Richard .

He was an officer of the French Legion of Honor and since 1892 a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts .
