Eduard Toldrà i Soler (born April 7, 1895 in Vilanova i la Geltrú , † May 31, 1962 in Barcelona ) was a Spanish violinist , conductor and composer .

Toldrà received his first lessons on the violin from his father. At a young age he studied at the Escola Municipal de Música Barcelona with Rafael Gálvez (violin) and Antoni Nicolau (harmony). In 1912 Toldrà made his solo debut and in the same year he founded the string quartet Renaixement, which toured at home and abroad for ten years. In 1921 he was appointed professor of violin at the Escola Municipal de Música.

From 1921 to 1936 Toldrà was concert master and assistant conductor with the Pau Casals orchestra and also presented his own works during this time. As a conductor from 1924 to 1934 he directed the Orquestra d'Estudis Simfònics, which consisted of amateur musicians.

At the newly founded Orquestra Municipal de Barcelona, ​​he was appointed titular conductor in 1943. The orchestra was instrumental in spreading Catalan , contemporary Spanish and international music. Toldrà has worked as a guest conductor with many orchestras in Spain and Europe.

Works

His music, especially the songs, are shaped by his fondness for Spanish folklore and Catalan poetics. Stylistically, his works can be assigned to French musical aesthetics from the period between the wars.
