Eduardo António Prieto Valadim

Eduardo António Prieto Valadim (born July 13, 1856 in Lisbon , † January 1890 in Niassa , Mozambique ), better known under his military rank as Tenente Valadim , was a Portuguese military man. He was one of the heroes of the campaigns that the Portuguese army led in Africa at the end of the 19th century.

Career

Eduardo Valadim entered the Colégio Militar in 1880 under number 132 . In 1884 he came by ship to Mozambique, where he took part in several military actions against rebel tribal chiefs with the rank of officer. In January he was beheaded in Niassa province by Chief Mataca while trying to hoist the Portuguese flag in a village. His death caused a wave of consternation. In the course of the heroic transfiguration, streets in numerous Portuguese cities were named after him.
