The Edward E. Boynton House is a Frank Lloyd Wright designed apartment building in Rochester , New York. The Prairie-style house was completed in 1908 and is now part of the East Avenue Preservation District , which is on the National Register of Historic Places . It is at 16 East Boulevard.

History and description of the house

Edward Boynton was a successful businessman who Frank Wright met through a business associate, Warren McArthur; Wright designed a house for McArthur in Chicago . Wright came to Rochester in 1907 to advise Boynton and his daughter Beulah - Boynton's wife had died a few years earlier - on the selection of the plot of land. Boynton acquired four neighboring parcels (a good 8,000 m²), on which not only the house, but also an extensive garden, a large reflecting pool and tennis facilities could be found. Wright not only designed the house, but also the garden and large parts of the interior. He worked closely with Beulah Boynton - a harmonious partnership that was far from typical of Wright - and took many of their suggestions into account.

The house is built on an extended T-floor plan and extends over two floors. The living room turns into a veranda that opens onto the street. The very large dining room includes several rows of the colored glass windows characteristic of Wright houses, some of which also serve as skylights. The total cost of the house was substantial at $ 55,000 for the time.

The Boyntons lived in the house until 1918 when they sold it. In the 1920s, the property was dismembered, which seriously challenged Wright's conception that had the house embedded in the landscape. The house is still privately owned to this day. The interior is not accessible to visitors and the exterior can only be viewed from the street (East Boulevard, Hawthorne Street).
