Edward Gregson
Edward Gregson (born July 23, 1945 in Sunderland , England ) is an English composer .
Life
At the age of 8 he got his first piano lessons. He came into contact with the brass bands of the Salvation Army and joined the Tottenham Citadel Band . He began his first attempts at composing for piano at the age of 11. In 1963 he began his studies at the Royal Academy of Music . There Frederick Durant provided him with the tools he needed to compose and convinced him to take up further studies in piano and composition with Alan Bush . Already at the academy he won several composition prizes, most recently with the Quintet for Brass , which he composed for the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble . He also got in contact with Geoffrey Brand , who encouraged him to write various pieces for brass bands. The range of brass band compositions began in 1966 with a concertante for piano and brass band.The first actual work was Suite - Voices of Youth in 1967.
He is a Senior Lecturer in Music at Goldsmiths College , London .
