Edward Hallowell (herpetologist)

Edward Hallowell (born September 14, 1808 , † August 11, 1860 ) was an American medical doctor and herpetologist . Hallowell studied medicine in Philadelphia and practiced as a doctor there.

As a herpetologist, he described 60 new species of reptiles, including the coffee snake Ninia atrata , the dark earth snake ( Atractus fuliginosus ), the wolf snake Lycophidion laterale , the house snake Boaedon virgatus (formerly Lamprophis virgatus) and the black-headed snake ( Tantilla vermiformis ). He also described amphibians such as the toad Amietophrynus maculatus and the frog Hyperolius concolor or the swordtail newt Cynops ensicauda . The tree frog Hyla hallowellii was named in his honor (Thompson 1912).

He published mostly in the Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia.
