Edward Kavazanjian

Edward Kavazanjian (* around 1951 ) is an American civil engineer who specializes in geotechnical engineering and is a professor at Arizona State University .

Kavazanjian studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (bachelor's degree in 1973, master's degree in 1975) and received his doctorate in 1978 from the University of California, Berkeley . He worked as a civil engineer for 20 years before becoming an associate professor and later professor at Arizona State University in 2004. There he is at the Global Institute of Sustainability and the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment.

He dealt with soil mechanical parameters of garbage (important for the design of landfills), geotechnical design and analysis of landfills and the behavior of landfills and highways during earthquakes. In the case of the earthquake behavior of landfills, he is co-author of a corresponding guideline from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and in the case of highways a guideline from the FHWA (Federal Highway Administration).

In 2009 he received the Ralph B. Peck Award of the ASCE , in 2010 the Thomas A. Middlebrooks Award and in 2011 the Terzaghi Award .

In 2009 he was President of the ASCE Geo-Institute.
